O’ga P’ogeh Land Tax

What is the O’ga P’ogeh Land Tax?

Welcome to the O’ga P’ogeh Land Tax (OPLT)! You have found yourself here because you want to move beyond hollow land acknowledgments and are ready to take actionable steps toward supporting Indigenous people in your community.

We are a grassroots elective land tax project in O’ga P’ogeh (Santa Fe), NM that returns wealth to Indigenous communities in their homelands. Also known as a voluntary land tax, honor tax, or ‘real rent,’ paying this land tax recognizes your access to stolen land and stolen wealth in a tangible and vital way.

When you pay into the OPLT, you are directly funding local Indigenous groups, ensuring that community-based initiatives, mutual aid efforts, and wellness projects in O’ga P’ogeh Owingeh can thrive.

Questions To Consider

Whether you are just learning about OPLT for the first time or are working on your pitch to get friends to contribute, we encourage you to reflect on the following questions. If you want to share your responses with us, you can send us an email or comment on our website!

Andrea Landry, an Anishinaabe mother, children’s book author, freelance writer, life skills coach and instructor, offers these questions to contemplate:

Your honest reflections will allow you to come from a place of integrity when engaging in issues that impact Indigenous people.

How has my family benefited from the past and present colonization and genocide of the original peoples of these lands?

How did my family gain access to originally Indigenous lands?

How am I continuing to benefit from colonization today?

What legacy does my family have in the role of colonization?
